Although Borneo is more popular for its wildlife and nature, the island is home to some of the best beaches in Malaysia – if not, some of the best beaches in the far-east. The beaches are located mainly in the eastern state of Sabah – Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park beaches, Tanjung Aru Beach, as well as the Shangri La Rasa Ria Beach close to the city of Kota Kinabalu. The exotic Permai Rainforest Resort in the western state of Sarawak also has a great private beach. On the other hand, the far east of Malaysian Borneo’s Coast boasts some of the nicest beaches to visit. You need to consider FCO advice when visiting this region and check whether travel insurance will cover your stay there. Here are some of the best beaches recommended by Borneo Dream.
Best Beach In Sarawak – Permai Private Beach
South Malaysia beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. In fact, Permai Rainforest Resort is an example of this beauty. The beach is located in Sarawak – which is the state of north-west Borneo in Malaysia. The beach is located close to the Bako National Park & Mount Santubong and is considered one of our favourite areas in Borneo. The beach has a lovely rustic desert island feel. Sunbathers might be disappointed due to the boulders on the shoreline. But there are pockets of white sand if you want to sunbathe on the beach. Don’t forget to tour the waterfalls in the adjoining rainforest. It has a natural rock pool just before reaching the beach. You can easily wash off any sand and salt here.
Best Beaches In Sabah – Shangri La Rasa Beach
Pantai Dalit is considered one of the best beaches in Sabah. This beach is surrounded by four hundred acres of lush tropical vegetation which makes it the perfect location for nature and beach lovers. The hotel consists of exotic gardens, numerous amenities, and a great place for families and kids. You will find a vast array of places for food and drinks in the hotel. In fact, you won’t be disappointed with the sunset cocktail at the Sampan Bar.
Tanjung Aru Beach
Tanjung Aru beach is located just 6 kilometres south of Kota Kinabalu – near the Shangri La Tanjung Aru. It is a very local area with an abundance of food stalls and restaurants and a few tourists. Tanjung Aru is a great place to sample some of the local cuisines in Malaysia. Our favourite is the fresh seafood and the steaming bowl of Laksa and Roti Chenai. This is a great spot to visit when you are in Borneo.
Selingan Island (Turtle Island)
Selingan Island is in the Sulu Sea and consists of shallow seas and white sandy beaches. The turtle rehabilitation centre is the main attraction of this island. Although this is the best place to see turtles, trips are restricted due to animal welfare concerns. In fact, up to 40 people may gather around a turtle on the island. This island is on the border of FCO warnings, and you should keep it in mind when visiting the area.
